Fear is not real. It is something we create in our heads. It is the product of the thoughts we create.
Every day we are faced with challenges; with circumstances and situations that scare us or make us feel uncomfortable. And most of us have a learned behaviour where we immediately go to a position of fear. We allow ourselves to grow scared. We allow ourselves to become fearful.
And when we react from a position of fear, it is so easy to see things completely out of focus. The shadows on the wall become bigger. The strange noises become louder. Our feeling of discomfort sometimes becomes unbearable. We feel great dis-ease.
We need to reteach ourselves at these times. We need to take a step back, and allow ourselves to take in the facts of the circumstance or situation. We need, as far as possible, to remove the emotion from our view. We need to look at whatever it is and see it for whatever it is.
Think about the little child who hears an unfamiliar sound in the dark and becomes scared. That fear could become overwhelming, but once the light is switched on, the cupboards opened and the bed covers lifted the fear almost immediately subsides. This rational action, probably taken by an adult, teaches the child to see things clearly before allowing emotion to run away with itself.
So, we need to switch on the light when we feel fearful, and allow ourselves to see things clearly. To see things for what they are. This is about confronting our thought patterns and changing them. This is about not giving into thoughts that shouldn’t be allowed to survive.
