I am sure you have all had “one of those days” recently. A day when you did not seem to accomplish anything? No matter how hard you worked, you just didn’t get anything done on that To-Do list. Relax! It happens to all of us. No-one can honestly say that it does not happen to them.
We start out the day determined to tackle that list, or a particular project. And then, despite our best intentions, life gets in the way. Our mobile rings. We get an urgent email request. Someone interrupts our progress with a question that needs answering. Everyone wants your undivided attention, and you are only one person. Everything just seems to take longer than it should. And then we start to feel despondent.
This is the point where we need to be most aware. Aware that life is not normal currently. Aware that our routines have been disrupted. Aware that our responsibilities have become greater. We are juggling our work lives with our home lives and the two are intermingling, often creating interruptions and distractions.
So – what do we do? How can we manage this “new normal”?
I have a great suggestion. Get up just a little earlier and spend an hour dealing with the important tasks before your mobile has a chance to ring. Before someone else sends that urgent email request. Before you are interrupted by someone wanting your undivided attention. You will be amazed at how much you can get done and you will feel less resentful when you need to deal with that call, that email, that interruption or your “new normal”.
Celebrate even the small accomplishments and build positive momentum from there!
